Rise of Athena by Play’n Go offers no big surprises in terms of the basic gameplay. The grid features 5 reels and 3 rows, which is a fairly common structure. The same applies to the player’s goals. All you need to do is arrange identical symbols from left to right, starting with the first reel. 3 or more symbols will award you a payout, depending on the symbols you landed.

Ever since the smash hit of their Book of Dead title, Play’n Go has somewhat specialized in old-school 10-line slots. Few software providers still keep their paylines at such a low number, but the simplicity can be refreshing.

Wilds are the more interesting special symbol in this game. They can substitute any other symbol to make winning lines, excluding the Scatter. However, Rise of Athena wild symbols come in three different shapes – bronze, silver, and gold. The latter two variants have a 2x or 3x multiplier attached to them, respectively.

To make matters more exciting, these Wilds are also “sticky”. Essentially, they stick around with each spin, but the multiplier decreases by 1. As such, gold multipliers can stay around for 3 spins in total. It’s a fun addition to the basic Wild mechanic and one of the standout Play’n Go Rise of Athena features.

PAYOUTS

The game boasts no less than 10 symbols with different payout ranges. That’s more or less standard in this day and age. However, the low number of paylines combined with the variety of symbols means that you won’t hit winning lines often.

That’s not our biggest gripe with this game, though. Although the nominal RTP caps out at a decent 96.02%, Rise of Athena RTP can come in different versions. This depends on the online casino you’re playing at and can be as low as 84.2$. Still, inconsistent house edge levels are a big minus in our book – and a questionable business practice to boot.

There are definitely things to like about the Rise of Athena slot game, but it’s ultimately a fairly forgettable release. On one hand, we love the way the Wilds work, and the presentation is well-made. On the other, none of the other features or mechanics stand out in any way. It’s not a bad slot by any means – but our top online slots for girls need to be a bit more interesting than that.

Additionally, the different RTP rates are downright horrible, and we can’t be happy about Play’n Go implementing them. At best, they present a hoop players have to jump through to make sure they’re getting their money’s worth.
